Glossary

AI SEO Glossary for Michigan Marketers

Plain definitions of the terms that come up in our guides and in conversations about AI search.

AI Overviews

AI-generated summaries that appear in some Google results, with links to supporting pages. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. There is no special markup.

AI Mode

Google's conversational search experience for longer questions and follow-ups. Traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is reported inside the Performance report in Google Search Console.

Generative engine optimization (GEO)

A popular industry name for making content easy for AI systems to understand and cite. In practice it overlaps heavily with good SEO: clear answers, original information, and accurate structured data.

E-E-A-T

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness, the qualities Google's guidance uses to describe helpful content. Google says trust matters most.

Entity

A distinct thing search engines can identify, such as your business, a city, or a service. Consistent names, addresses, and descriptions help search engines connect the dots.

Keyword clustering

Grouping search phrases that share the same intent so one strong page can serve them all, instead of several thin pages competing with each other.

Search intent

What a searcher is trying to do: learn, compare, or buy. Matching intent matters more than repeating exact words.

Topic cluster

A pillar page linked to supporting articles on related subtopics. It helps readers and search engines see how deeply a site covers a subject.

Scaled content abuse

Google's spam-policy name for producing many pages mainly to manipulate rankings, with little value for readers, whether the pages are written by AI or by hand.

Google Business Profile

Your free business listing on Google Search and Maps. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance, and prominence.

Structured data

Code, usually JSON-LD, that labels page content for search engines. Google advises keeping it consistent with what is visible on the page.

Human-in-the-loop

A workflow where a person reviews and approves AI output before it is used. Every Haven workflow is human-in-the-loop.

How We Write These Guides

Google asks who made a page, how it was made, and why it exists. Here are our answers.

Written and edited by the team that runs these workflows for Michigan businesses.
AI helps us research and outline. Every claim is checked against a source we link.
Each guide shows its last update date and is revised when Google's guidance changes.
We write to help Michigan marketers do better work, not to publish pages for their own sake.
